“To go farther, go together.”

Hi, I'm Alan.

Growing up in Cleveland as a latchkey kid teaches creativity and resilience. Early on I paid for convenience store Slurpees by pulling weeds. I learned the value of the right tools (gloves), people (soccer teammates), and market (old neighbors).

My first airplane ride took me to Rice University, where Philosophy taught me to ask the right questions. I paid for pizza by doing stand-up comedy in local clubs. I learned how to find common ground with total strangers, and how to make them laugh.

I didn’t have the courage to audition for SNL so I went to med school and ended up a Cardiothoracic Surgery resident at Duke. 100+ hour weeks of life-and-death work with a sprawling ballet of co-workers taught me the value of reliability, competency, and positivity.

I left medicine to start what became the largest mobile software company in healthcare. After selling it I eventually ran the acquiring parent. Over the years I’ve done venture capital, private equity, led an IPO, transacted dozens of businesses, and led companies in the software, healthcare, industrial, and consumer goods markets.

My wife is an incredibly accomplished physician executive and our three kids make us proud every day. It’s been quite a ride, one I couldn’t have predicted but am excited to keep riding.

It’s the last of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous words that are most interesting to me. “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

The first part is broad and wise in recognizing that a fulfilling life requires hard work. Spousal relationships, child-rearing, personal well-being, public service, professional activities, creative pursuits… all of it.

The last part is specific and profound in its implied question: what work is worth your time, your energy, your gifts, your effort, your heart? That’s deeply personal and different based on individuals and life situations.

I’m lucky enough to love business and not be terrible at it. Building bridges connecting compelling ideas with complicated realities. Solving meaningful problems with talented, interesting people. Creating commercial engines that change the lives of customers, employees, and communities. For me, that is work worth doing. Life’s best prize indeed.
